Imagine having to wear
the same shirt, pants, shoes, and jacket every day. If you are a teenager in
middle school or high school, the clothes you wear, the type of phone you have,
and how big your house is impacts how you are treated. Today in school if you
are a girl and you have Ugg boots, rock rival jeans, miss me jeans, Victoria
secret clothing, brand name clothing, IPhone, and live in a nice house,
you are treated differently than a girl that doesn’t have any of that;
such as just tennis shoes, regular cheap jeans, and plain non brand name
clothing, doesn’t have a smart phone, and lives in a small house. Guys in
school that wear name brand clothing; vans, Jordan’s, Nikes, and expensive
jeans they are as well treated differently than a guy that doesn’t have all of
that.
In our world today people
with a lot of money and high socioeconomic status (SES) are treated better than
people with not a lot of money and low (SES). I do not agree on treating people
differently based on their (SES) because at the end of the day we are all
humans and deserve to be treated equally. When people with low (SES) are
treated with no respect, and receive dirty looks it tends to bring them down
and they start too second guess themselves. For example, people with low (SES)
and that have been treated poorly their whole life it could affect who
they choose to marry, since they don’t have a lot of money they would choose to
marry someone that does have money so they wouldn’t have to live the rest of
their life with a low (SES). They may choose to marry that person whether or
not they have any feelings for them.
Another example on how
(SES) affects ones identity is people that have low (SES) don’t believe that
they will go far in life. They don’t think that they will go far in life
because they believe that they don’t have as many opportunities as someone with
high (SES). This however is not true because everyone has the same
opportunities, people with lower (SES) just have to work harder than others
with high (SES).
Finally people with low
(SES) think that they also have poor health. They could be the healthiest
person in the world but to them they think that they are worthless and dirty. I
believe that everyone should be treated the same and we should not treat people
differently depending on their socioeconomic status.

I like the fact that you chose to share about this because this is a topic that doesn't cross everyone's mind. It saddens me to know that people feel lesser of a person because of minor things such as the one's you listed above. I agree with you as far as not treating people differently because of their SES.
ReplyDeleteI find this very interesting how differently people can be treated for such things, as if their personality is worthless practically if they're not as high as others on their socioeconomic status. And that they can even feel as if they have poor health is very surprising!
ReplyDeleteI have to disagree with the statement that people with low SES have the same opportunities as those with high SES. People with low SES are often lacking many opportunities. For example, if their parents have to work 2 or more jobs to support the family, the children will not get the same support with their homework, or maybe they will miss out on opportunities such as school sports and other activities that could put them ahead in life. They will also be missing out on crucial relationships with their parents. Children with high SES get way more opportunities, and often they live in school districts that have more money as well, which means they also have more resources than children with low SES. This country is very divided and makes it very difficult for people with low SES to raise their SES. Something needs to be done to even the playing field for all children, regardless of SES.
